Francesco Mitrano a grandi dans le domaine familial en Toscane en compagnie des chevaux et entouré de vastes étendues de terre. C’est là qu’il a appris à aimer l’équitation, la nature et la vie. Il a étudié et vécu en Italie et à l’étranger, en Europe et dans le monde entier. Il a travaillé dans la mode et dans les armes à feu, et il possède un vignoble, une oliveraie et un hôtel de charme dans sa Toscane. 
Depuis 2012, il réside avec sa famille à Monaco, où il fonda, et préside, la Fédération du Polo de et le Monte-Carlo Polo Club. Il est le capitaine charismatique de l’équipe du club.
« C’est notre devoir dans la vie d’essayer de faire quelque chose de noble, et le polo est un sport vraiment noble. », déclare-t-il.
En tant que représentant, avec sa Fédération du Polo, de l’organisation monégasque Peace & Sport, Francesco Mitrano joint le geste à la parole : « Nous vivons dans un monde qui a désespérément besoin de guérison et de collaboration pacifique, dit-il, surtout en cette période de pandémie. »
Quel honneur et quelle joie ce fut pour nous de converser avec cet homme remarquable, d’une force tranquille et d’une bonté exceptionnelle.
Comment votre expérience internationale a-t-elle façonné votre caractère, votre style, vos goûts ?
« L’Italie est certainement le pays où se trouvent mes racines, où ma culture et mon style se sont formés. Mais grâce à mon amour du sport et des voyages, j’ai eu l’occasion d’assimiler les coutumes et les traditions des différents pays où je me suis rendu, ce qui m’a permis de me sentir chez moi partout dans le monde. »

En 2013, vous avez fondé le Monte-Carlo Polo Club et la première Fédération officielle de polo de Monaco. Vous avez aussi vous avez organisé le premier tournoi du Polo en Principauté, et unique tournoi international de Polo à Monaco, sous le haut patronage du S.A.S. Prince Albert II ce, qui est devenu une tradition toutes les années. Quelles sont les compétences et les capacités que votre expérience d’entrepreneur vous a permis d’appliquer à l’organisation et au développement du Polo Club et de la Fédération du Polo ?
« Ma première expérience d’entrepreneur m’a appris à avoir de la détermination, du dévouement, de la discipline, et à faire un effort constant. Mais elle m’a surtout appris l’optimisme, sans lequel je n’aurais jamais réussi ce que j’ai entrepris. »

Vous avez expliqué dans diverses interviews pourquoi Monaco est le lieu idéal pour votre activité sportive. Mais vous êtes aussi un père de famille. Quels sont les aspects de Monaco qui en font l’endroit idéal pour élever deux jeunes enfants ?
« Monte-Carlo est certainement le lieu idéal pour mon travail, d’autant plus que notre souverain le prince Albert II est un grand partisan du sport et un ancien athlète lui-même. Monte-Carlo est célèbre dans le monde entier pour ses nombreux événements sportifs annuels, du Grand Prix de formule 1 au Rolex Tennis Masters, en passant bien sûr par le football. C’est pourquoi je suis particulièrement fier d’avoir amené le polo en Principauté, c’était quelque chose de tout à fait nouveau. J’ajouterai que la Principauté est un endroit extrêmement sûr, avec un climat merveilleux, la mer, le soleil et une atmosphère cosmopolite internationale. Toutes ces caractéristiques en font l’endroit idéal pour élever des enfants, dans un cadre calme et absolument constructif. »
Vous êtes très impliqué dans les actions caritatives, de la soirée de gala annuelle lors de la Monte-Carlo Polo Cup à votre participation à l’organisation Peace & Sport de Monaco. En avril 2021, vous vous êtes rendu avec votre équipe à Dubai pour la Monte-Carlo Polo Cup Emirates. Plutôt qu’un tournoi, il s’agissait d’un match amical, un événement que vous avez décrit comme un acte de diplomatie. Comment le sport, et notamment un sport comme le polo, avec sa grande élégance et son sens du fair-play peut-il contribuer au respect des différences et à la paix entre les nations ?
« J’ai la conviction que l’être humain concourt moins pour gagner un trophée que pour améliorer sa vie et celle des autres, dans le respect des règles. Il y a dans notre essence même un besoin d’atteindre des objectifs toujours plus élevés. C’est ainsi que l’esprit de compétition typique du sport, et du polo en particulier, synthétise les efforts et l’engagement des athlètes en général, qui œuvrent ensuite pour le progrès humain et pour la paix universelle. »
En tant que père, en tant qu’ami, en tant que voisin, en tant que résident de Monaco, qu’avez-vous appris et que pensez-vous avoir pu enseigner au cours de cette longue crise de la Covid-19 ?
« J’ai appris que la détermination, le dévouement et la discipline ainsi que l’effort constant nous aident à faire face aux moments difficiles de la vie. »
« J’ai communiqué cela aux personnes qui me sont chères, aux personnes qui me sont proches, tant dans ma famille que dans ma vie professionnelle. C’est un moment où nous devons tous être forts, nous devons chercher à le surmonter avec optimisme et positivité, toujours. J’ajouterai que je me considère très chanceux, j’ai passé cette période difficile, qui a été très complexe pour tout le monde, dans un endroit vraiment merveilleux, qui a contribué à la rendre moins sombre, moins tragique. »
Vous produisez un film avec Quinn Production "Polo : le rêve d’un enfant peut changer le monde". Pouvez-vous nous en dire un peu plus sur ce projet ?
« Issu d’une idée de ma part, le film est produit par Quinn Studios Entertainment, Nereides Group et la Fédération du Polo de Monaco, que je représente en tant que président. L’année dernière, j’ai passé du temps à Los Angeles, avec l’équipe du Quinn Studios Entertainment et nous avons travaillé sur la partie technique du film, concernant le sport du polo. Grâce à mes relations dans le monde du polo, j’ai facilité les repérages aux Émirats arabes unis et sélectionné de superbes décors, puisque le film sera également tourné aux Émirats. En juillet 2021, nous avons présenté le projet du film lors d’une conférence de presse au Festival de Cannes. La présentation de ce projet a suscité beaucoup d’attention et d’intérêt de la part des médias internationaux car il est fondé sur une histoire vraie. Le film raconte l’histoire d’un groupe de jeunes Américains de banlieue qui trouvent la rédemption à travers ce sport. C’est une histoire inspirante où le polo, toujours considéré comme le ‘sport des rois’, acquiert une signification nouvelle et plus profonde. En fait, dans notre histoire, ce n’est pas ce sport qui fait de nous des ‘rois’, mais plutôt notre courage et notre attitude envers la vie qui élèvent notre esprit en tant qu’êtres humains. Le film est en cours de production et sortira en 2023. »
« J’adore travailler avec les enfants et les adolescents. Je suis moi-même père et j’aime vraiment inspirer et former les jeunes esprits à travers la discipline du polo, ses valeurs et ses codes d’honneur. Je pratique ce sport depuis de nombreuses années. Il m’a beaucoup appris et m’a donné l’endurance, l’éthique et le courage d’affronter et de surmonter les moments les plus difficiles. »

Entrepreneur Francesco Mitrano grew up on his family’s vast estate in Tuscany, in the company of horses and surrounded by open tracts of land. This is where he learnt to love riding, to love nature, to love life. Mitrano has studied and lived in Italy and abroad, in Europe and further afield. He has worked in fashion and in firearms, and he owns a vineyard, an olive grove and a boutique hotel in his native Tuscany.
Since 2012, though, he and his family have been residents of Monaco, where he is the founder and president of the Monte Carlo Polo Club and the Monaco Polo Federation, and charismatic captain of the Club’s team. The Polo Federation, under the direction of Francesco Mitrano, represents Monaco on the world polo stage and is a member of the International Polo Federation.

“Polo is such a noble sport,” founder and president Mitrano says, “we have to do something noble.”
As representative, along with the Polo Federation, of Monaco’s Peace and Sport organisation, Mitrano puts deed to word. “We are living in a world which desperately needs healing and peaceful collaboration,” he says, “especially at this time of the Covid-19 crisis.”
What an honour and a joy it was for us to spend some time in conversation with this remarkable man of such quiet strength and exceptional kindness.
You were raised on family property in Tuscany but you have also lived in several great cities of the world – in the United States, South Africa, France, England and Sweden. How has this international town-and-country experience shaped your character, your style, your tastes?
“Italy is certainly where my roots are, where my culture and style were formed. But thanks to my love of sport and travel, I have had the opportunity to assimilate the customs and traditions of the various countries where I have been, which has allowed me to feel at home in the world.”
You are a successful entrepreneur, currently producing wine and oil in Tuscany where you also have a boutique hotel. In 2013 you founded the Monte Carlo Polo Club, under the high patronage of Prince Albert II. What are the skills and abilities that your experience as an entrepreneur has enabled you to apply to the organisation and development of the Polo Club and the Monaco Polo Foundation you founded?
“My early entrepreneurial experience taught me to have determination, dedication, discipline and to make a constant effort. But it especially taught me optimism, without which I would never have achieved what I set out to do.”
You have explained in various interviews why Monaco is the ideal place for your sporting activity. But you are a father as well. What are the aspects of Monaco that makes it the ideal place to raise two young kids?
“Monte Carlo is certainly the ideal location for my work, especially since our sovereign the Prince is a great supporter of sport and a former athlete himself. Monte Carlo is famous the world over for its numerous annual sporting events, from the Formula 1 Grand Prix to the Rolex Tennis Masters, and of course football. This is why I am particularly proud to have brought polo to the Principality as well, it was something quite new. I’ll add that the Principality is an extremely safe place, with a wonderful climate, the sea, the sun and an international cosmopolitan atmosphere. All these characteristics make it the ideal place to raise kids, in a setting that is calm and absolutely constructive.”

You are very involved in charity work, from the annual gala evening during the Monte Carlo Polo Cup to your participation with Monaco’s Peace and Sport Organisation. In April 2021 you went with your team to Dubai for the Monte Carlo Polo Cup Emirates. Rather than a tournament, it was a friendly match, an event that you have described as an act of diplomacy. How can sport – and especially a sport like polo, with its great elegance, its sense of fair play and its soul of noblesse oblige – contribute to respect for differences and to peace amongst nations?
“It is my conviction that human beings compete less for winning a trophy than for improving their lives and the lives of others, in full respect for the rules. In our very essence is a need to reach ever higher goals. This is how the competitive spirit typical of sport, and of polo in particular, synthesises the efforts and commitment of athletes in general, who then work for human progress and toward universal peace.”

As a father, as a friend, as a neighbour, as a resident of Monaco, what have you learnt and what do you think you have been able to teach during this long Covid-19 crisis?
“I have certainly learnt that determination, dedication and discipline, which I mentioned earlier, along with constant effort, help us face difficult times in life. I have communicated this to the people dear to me, to people close to me, both in my family and in my professional life. It is a time when we all need to be strong, we need to seek to overcome it with optimism and positivity, always. I’ll add that I consider myself very fortunate. I have spent this difficult time, this time that has been very complex for everyone, in a truly marvellous place, which has contributed to making this time less dark, less tragic.”
You are producing a film with Quinn Production, “Polo: One Child’s Dream Can Change the World”. Can you tell us a bit about this? “The film, from an original idea of mine, is produced by Quinn Studios Entertainment, Nereides Group and the Monte Carlo Polo Federation, which I represent as president.
I’ve spent time over the past year in Los Angeles, working with Valentina Castellani-Quinn, Chairman/President of Quinn Studios Entertainment in Hollywood. We worked on the technical part of the film, regarding the sport of polo. Thanks to my solid relationships in the world of polo, I facilitated the location scouting in the United Arab Emirates and selected some great settings, as the film will also be shot in the UAE.

In July we presented the film during a Press Conference at the Cannes Film Festival. The film project presentation has received a lot of attention and interest from the international media because it is based on a true story. The film narrates the tale of a group of kids from suburban America who find redemption through the sport of polo. It’s an inspiring story where polo, always considered the "Sport of Kings", acquires a new and more profound meaning. In fact, in our story it is not the sport of polo that makes us "Kings", but rather our courage and attitude towards life which elevates our spirit as human beings. The film is in production and will be released in 2023.
I love working with kids and teenagers. I'm a father myself and truly cherish inspiring and shaping young minds through the discipline of polo, its values and codes of honour. I've been involved in polo for many years and it has taught me so very much and has given me the stamina, the ethics and the courage to face and overcome even the most difficult moments.
